Steps to Calvary
March 5 begins the traditional observance called Lent. Lent offers Christ's followers an invitation
to reflect on the purpose of Christ'slife leading to His sacrificial death. It is a personal reflection,
intended to bring the believer into touch with his relationship with Jesus Christ as his Savior.
The practices of Lenten observance vary. Ours are not as formal as others. But we can find
spiritual strength in taking this time for contemplating the meaning of Christ dying for us.
Our Lord led His disciples to see His death as a fulfillment of His coming. Throughout the
Gospel accounts He pointed to that event as the cumlmination of His life.
Through April 6 we will look at these Gospel recollections as a kind of spiritual pilgrimage
to Calvary. (The Sundays following Ash Wednesday through Holy Week are not counted in the
40 days of Lent). These "Steps to Calvary" will be a good time to consider what
it means to be a follower of Christ.
